New Strat Pickups

Hi guys - I'm usually over on the TDPRI, but I figured you might be able to help me with this issue.

I have an American Series Strat that my granddad gave me seven years ago, right before he passed away. I will never get rid of it, however I cannot play it because I am never happy with how it sounds.

It's an alder bodied Strat with a maple neck and vintage style tremolo.

I'd like something John Mayer-ish in the neck, that rounded low-output blues sound. Something like that but slightly hotter in the middle. In the bridge, an overwound singlecoil or some type of humbucker in the bridge, closing in on P-90 territory sound wise. I heard a Tom Anderson humbucker in the bridge that sort of sounded like a P-90 crossed with a humbucker.

So what do you guys recommend? The single coils do not have to be noiseless as I feel like I'm alienating myself with something I'm already too picky about.

Hey thanks for joining us here and welcome!

I responded to your other topic, Im ShortBuSX over there, I was the one that couldnt wrap my head around going from cold to hot.
I mean cold is considered less than 6k and hot is between 12 and 14k...I just cant imagine the switching transition or inbetween positions.
You would need two different cap values, you could possibly use a TBX for the bridge and middle...this would give you two cap options for your two hottest pups, and then .022 for your neck tone pot.
You could get into some really cool switching options with a set up like that, like splitting the humbucker...Id look into a super switch.

I plan on running the bridge pickup with a 500K if I do get a 'bucker and I'll have it parallel/series switching as well.

If she does not sing to you then a change might be good. Keep the old set with all electronics. What year is she?
If you like the Mayer style it is similar to early 60's neck and middle and a hot bridge but not as hot as a Texas special bridge. Keep in mind having a balance to a set is important.
Whatever you do it can always be changed back or changed to some other set.
Enjoy

I noticed a guy at TDPRI had suggested you go with Klein pickups to you last week for your project.
Being quite pleased with my new Kleins I went to his website today contemplating future replacements for another guitar of mine and noticed he makes a single coil sized P-90 and some really cool stacked and tapped humbuckers...you need to get in contact with Chris Klein about your idea and see what he can do for you. Im loving my Kleins!

Definitely check out Chris Klein. Let him know the type of sound you're looking for & Chris will help... Priced right too.
